A GLOBAL ONLINE COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS AGED 11-14 (OWLETS) AND 15-18 (OWLYS)

Owlypia is a global online competition inspired by The Intellectuals’ Challenge (TIC). It aims to inspire the intellectual curiosity in young minds around the world. The first Owlypia took place on 28 February 2018 with over 960 Owlypians participating from 28 countries around the world.

The dates for the upcoming Owlypia competitions: 24 November 2018 and 23 March 2019.

Owlypia is an excellent opportunity for young individuals to compete with others online showing their knowledge and skills in their favorite subject areas. Any student aged 11-14 (Owlets) or 15-18 (Owlys) can enroll to take part in this online competition. Participants must choose their favourite subject and prepare themselves for the competition by using the recommended resources indicated under the subjects.

The subjects in Owlypia are:

By studying the content in each subject carefully, the young intellectual minds prepare themselves for the online competition. Each student will choose his/her favourite subject where 80% of the questions will come from. They are also expected to address 20% of the questions coming from the Common Ground category. Please see Subjects page of TIC for details related to the content of each one.

Young minds will embrace challenges revolving around a central theme. This year’s theme is “Creativity: Beyond the Borders”.

We would like the young minds to

  • Challenge their intellectual capability
  • Expand their knowledge in specific areas
  • Find their career paths
  • Experience their academic area of interest from a global perspective
  • Build their self–confidence through subject-based questions
  • Deepen their knowledge and build multidisciplinary life skills
  • Become actively involved in an online challenge
  • Utilise individual qualities through collaborative activities
  • Improve their language skills by studying particular subject areas

All participants must take the online test at their school or in a designated exam centre under the supervision of their teachers or supervisors. The test will be invigilated in designated classrooms; however, any guidance or support will not be provided to the participants in any way.

The online test will be available to the students with a unique code, which will be sent to them in advance. Participants should follow the instructions on their computer screen.

BLOG 1: Countdown for my first Owlypia Experience

In only a few short weeks, the first ever ‘Owlypia’ competition will take off, and the idea that I will be there to see and compete in it is an unusual feeling.

Owlypia is an online competition which is made up of 100 standardized questions from the materials given on their website (http://www.intellectualschallenge.org/subjects) and you choose from which of the five to study from. 80 questions are from the topic you choose and prepare for through well-loved books, excellent movies, and a compilation of articles and videos. The other 20 are scattered with the other four. Everything is made to be easily accessible online, which is what drew me towards the competition when I first heard about it.  What really interested me was how Owlypia presents their first year’s theme: Failure, the Road to Success.

I’ve partaken in similar competitions before, both individually and as a team. Material-wise, they don’t have an avalanche of information pouring itself out through your screen, but they still have enough to make learning a challenge—an element I very often find out of calibration. As a new organization, I tip them my virtual hat. With a hefty prize and a reasonable registration fee, they seem to seal off the package. None of this matters, of course, unless you have a reason to compete. Now, I’ll try to give you several.

Owlypia is a way to get involved. The very first year of a competition, and the most important aspect are the competitors (lovingly dubbed ‘Owlypians’; maybe an Athena will pop up) and the opportunity to join anything with such potential is hard to find. Rest assured that these first-time Owlypians will not be forgotten. To be part of a community, to be part of an experience and to know as you submit your answers that hundreds of others around the globe are doing the same thing, and to do this from the relative comfort of your school— there is no other convenience they could have provided.

Of course, a large reason why you should consider registering is because of their determination to address real-world problems. Failure and success are fairly relative, so learning about it seems to be fairly hit-and-miss unless you have a way to connect it to your own experiences. With five topics and different sources in each, the magnitude of different stories and morals give you exactly that— a way to connect yourself and the world to what you’re learning. It is a way to take home what you’ve discovered and a way to use it.

The deadline for registration is Friday, 21 February 2018. The competition takes place one week after, on the 28th of February 2018. If you take a quick jump over to their website, you’ll even have the chance to try out all five of their demo tests. If you’re interested, give it a try. Maybe you’ll start the learning process right away. Maybe right now, you don’t feel as if there’s enough time. I can tell you right now, that isn’t true. Just trying is already the first step to victory. And that, reader, is success.
